Every once in a while, when I smell a skunk around Gorman or get annoyed with the stairs in the library, when the Cap Bar gets too loud or Haggar is too dark, I get a little a sick of studying on campus. On these rare occasions I excitedly ask around in an attempt to find a good place off campus, and invariably the answer is always Starbucks. It would take an entire article for me to blow off steam about my vindictiveness against Starbucks and everybody's heard the "I hate corporations" rant enough. However, I want to get the word out that there are in fact other places to go! Yes, I know it's revolutionary and probably dangerous, but we are independent thinkers, not corporation drinkers.

Last Sunday, I ventured to another coffee shop, called Java Me Up, a bit farther down MacArthur about fifteen minutes away from school. Java Me Up is a family owned and operated shop with very helpful and friendly staff. The prices were about the same as your average coffee shop (cheaper than Starbucks), but the tastes transcended the price. My personal recommendation is an Irish cream latte with whole milk, and thick foam. They also have smoothies for when the Texas heat becomes overbearing. In addition, they sell a slew of pastries and seven different types of gourmet sandwiches made fresh daily.

The environment was very study friendly, with several tables and armchairs to suit one's comfort level. Java Me Up has two main advantages over the competition: it has Free Wi-fi, unlike most coffee-shops, and it is connected to the New Valley Ranch Library. I didn't actually go into the Library, but it seemed rather sizeable-you can always use a different selection of books. They had some soft jazz playing, loud enough to hear, but soft enough that you could listen to your own music without having that weird double music sensation .The mood wasn't quite as cozy as you'd hope because the lights were a little bright, but considering the fact that I usually fall asleep in the dimly-lit Starbucks, it proved to be a more productive study session. If the weather is nice, there is a sizable patio outside which also gets wireless. So you can even enjoy the beautiful Dallas-sunsets while studying and caffeinating.
The next time you're looking to get off campus for study or for a new environment, Java Me Up is definitely the place for you.
